General Information
Site Name and Location:   Best Cleaners
Wichita, Kansas, United States
Description:
Historical activity that resulted in contamination.
The site is part of a larger investigation within the city of Wichita known as the Gilbert Mosley Plume. Drycleaning operations were conducted in a strip mall using tetrachloroethylene (PCE). Currently the building is used by the New Life Outreach Mission. Contaminants were found primarily along the city sewer line southwest of the former facility. At some point before investigation and remediation the City replaced the sewer line and probably removed some of the contaminated soil in the process. The site was investigated and is being remediated through the Kansas Drycleaner Environmental Response Act.

Deepest Significant Groundwater Contamination:
Plume Size:   550 ft long x 350 ft wide x 25 ft deep

Site Hydrology:
Depth to Groundwater:
  17 ft bgs
Lithology and Subsurface Geology:
Interbedded silts and clays to 9 ft bgs unlain by sand. Sand rests on shale bedrock at roughly 40ft bgs.
Conductivity:
  ft/day
Gradient:
  0.001

Pathways and DNAPL Presence:
Pathways:
  Groundwater
Soil
DNAPL Presence:
  No
Vapor Intrusion Pathway:
Has the potential for vapor intrusion (VI) been evaluated?
  No
Has a vapor mitigation system been installed?
  No

Remediation Scenario:
Cleanup Goals:
Groundwater and soil below the respective EPA maximum contaminant levels for PCE and PCE degredation products.
Remedy Level:
  Full Scale Remedy

Technologies:
Technologies Used:

In Situ:
Air Sparging
Soil Vapor Extraction
Other technologies used:

Why the technology was selected:
The technology was selected based on cost and efficiency given the site geology.
Date implemented:
  System start-up September 2006.
Final remediation design:
Four vertical SVE wells screened from 5-15 ft bgs, five AS wells screened from 35 ft bgs to 37 ft bgs, three monitoring wells to determine radius of influence.

Results and Next Steps:
Results to date:
The initial design involved two remediation systems. After reviewing information on an active system in the area, only one of the systems was installed.

The system was shut down in November 2008 following a year of groundwater sampling indicating contaminants were below MCL or non-detect.
Next Steps:
Long-Term rebound study. Continue groundwater monitoring.

Costs:
Cost for Assessment:
  $16,103.17
Cost to Design and Implement:
  $51,768.85
Cost for Operation and Maintenance:
  Approximately $10,000 per year
Total Costs for Cleanup:
